Common Questions

Everything you might ask before you call.

Real answers on marine + waterfront work, emergencies, generators, EV chargers, panel upgrades, and how we price and permit.

General

General

Are you licensed and insured in Florida?

Yes. Mark 1 Electric is a fully licensed and insured Florida electrical contractor. License number and COI are provided on every proposal and available on request.

Where do you work?

Broward and Palm Beach counties — Pompano Beach (HQ), Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lighthouse Point, Coral Springs, Parkland, Wellington, Weston, and everything in between.

Do you provide fixed-price quotes?

Yes — after a real diagnosis, we give you a fixed-price quote in writing. No open clock, no surprise line items.

Do you pull permits?

Yes, every time it's required by code. Anyone offering to skip a required permit is not someone you want touching your electrical.

Do you handle warranty claims and callbacks?

Yes. All our work is warrantied. If something isn't right, call and we'll come back. That's the point of owner-run.

Waterfront & Marine

Waterfront & Marine

Do you handle dock and boat lift electrical work?

Yes — waterfront is our specialty. Dock outlets, boat lift motors, GFCI protection, shore power, seawall bonding, and marine-grade lighting per NEC 555.

What's different about marine electrical?

Marine electrical is governed by NEC Article 555 — different bonding, different GFCI rules, different equipment ratings. Everything is spec'd for salt air and moisture ingress.

Can you install a boat lift, or only repair existing ones?

Both. New installs on new docks, retrofits on existing docks, and motor replacement on existing lifts. We coordinate with dock builders on new construction.

My dock outlet keeps tripping — is that dangerous?

It's a warning sign. Usually a bonding issue, moisture ingress, or a bad GFCI. Don't ignore it — a failed GFCI on a dock can put voltage in the water.

Emergencies

Emergencies

How quickly can you respond to an electrical emergency?

Broward coastal (Pompano, Fort Lauderdale, Lighthouse Point) — usually under 1 hour. Boca / Delray / Boynton — usually under 90 minutes. Palm Beach interior and western Broward — usually under 2 hours.

Do you actually answer the phone at 3am?

Yes. The number rings a real person, not a call center. If we're on another emergency and can't answer immediately, we call back within minutes.

Is there an emergency call-out fee?

Yes — after-hours has a call-out minimum. It's clearly disclosed on the call before we roll a truck. No surprise invoices.

What counts as a real emergency?

Burning smell, sparks, hot panel or breaker, buzzing panel, water on live wiring, full outage that isn't FPL. If you have any of those — call, don't wait.

Generators & EV Chargers

Generators & EV Chargers

What size generator do I need?

Depends on your home's electrical load. A 22kW unit covers most 3-4 bedroom homes with AC. Larger homes with dual AC and pool equipment often need 26kW+. We do a real load calc, not a guess.

Natural gas or propane for a generator?

If you have city gas at the meter, natural gas is easier — no tank to fill. If you don't, propane works, but you need a tank sized for multi-day outages (typically 500-1000 gallons).

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Sometimes. If your panel is 100A or older, or already near capacity, adding a 40-60A EV load usually requires an upgrade. Load calc will tell us.

Which EV charger should I buy?

For Teslas — Tesla Wall Connector. For other EVs — ChargePoint Home Flex or Wallbox Pulsar. If you're unsure, we'll walk you through it on the estimate call.

Panel & Service Work

Panel & Service Work

How long am I without power during a panel upgrade?

Typically 4-8 hours during the actual switch, all in one day. We coordinate the FPL cut with the install so you're not out overnight.

Federal Pacific / Zinsco / Pushmatic — should I replace it?

Yes. Those brands have known failure and fire history. Every insurance carrier flags them.

Do I need 200A or 400A service?

200A is standard for most single-family homes. 400A makes sense for estate homes, pool houses, guest houses, or any property adding an EV + generator + large HVAC load.

Pricing & Payment

Pricing & Payment

How do you price the work?

Diagnostic fee for the first hour of troubleshooting, then fixed-price for the actual repair or install. No open-ended clock.

Is there a minimum service call?

Yes, a small trip charge minimum. We'll come out for a single outlet if you want.

Do you take credit cards?

Yes — Visa, MC, Amex, Discover. Check and ACH also fine. Big jobs typically progress-billed.

Financing?

For panel upgrades, generator installs, and larger projects — yes, we can point you to financing options. Ask on the estimate call.
